There is no shortage of people willing to tell you what the second coming will look like. Commentators, prophecy charts, bestselling novels, entire ministries built around interpreting the signs. But before any of that, there are the words of Jesus himself.
They are simpler than the industry that has grown up around them. And they are more consistent than most people realise.
"No one knows the day or the hour"
This is the thread that runs through everything Jesus said about his return. In Matthew 24:36 he says it directly: "But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father."
He does not say it once. He says it repeatedly, in different ways, to different audiences. The point is not subtle: stop trying to calculate the date. (Why date-setting always fails is a pattern as old as the church itself.)
"Be ready"
If you cannot know when, what can you do? Jesus answers that question too, and his answer is always the same.
- Matthew 24:44 — "So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him."
- Mark 13:35-37 — "Therefore keep watch because you do not know when the owner of the house will come back — whether in the evening, or at midnight, or when the cock crows, or at dawn. If he comes suddenly, do not let him find you sleeping. What I say to you, I say to everyone: Watch!"
- Luke 21:34-36 — "Be careful, or your hearts will be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness and the anxieties of life, and that day will close on you suddenly like a trap."
The instruction is not to predict. It is to prepare. Jesus made this vivid in the parable of the ten virgins — the difference was not knowledge, but preparation.
"I am going to prepare a place for you"
In John 14:3, Jesus says something quieter and more personal: "And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am."
This is not a warning. It is a promise. And the promise is not about cosmic events or geopolitical signs. It is about reunion. He is coming back because he wants his people with him.
What he did not say
Jesus did not provide a timeline. He did not name dates, or political leaders, or specific nations. He did not give his disciples a checklist of preconditions they could tick off. What he gave them was a posture: be awake, be faithful, be ready.
He also did not say the return would be comfortable. In Luke 17:26-30, he compares it to the days of Noah and the days of Lot — ordinary life interrupted without warning. People eating, drinking, buying, selling, and then, suddenly, everything changes. His extended teaching on this in Matthew 24 and the Olivet Discourse is worth reading in full.
What this means for you
If Jesus is consistent about anything, it is this: the return is certain, the timing is unknown, and readiness is your responsibility.
Readiness is not just a spiritual condition. It is also a practical one. The people you love, the words you have been meaning to say, the things you want them to know when you are gone — those are part of being ready.
Write what you need to say — because readiness is not a feeling. It is an action.
