Everyone has a gospel presentation. The four spiritual laws, the Romans road, the bridge illustration. These are useful tools. But they are not yours. They belong to everyone, which means they belong to no one in particular.
Your testimony is different. It is the one thing about the faith that no one else can say, because no one else lived it.
The sermon they will not hear
Most people who reject Christianity are not rejecting the arguments. They have heard the arguments. They may even find them reasonable. What they have not heard, often, is the honest story of someone they trust — not a polished version delivered from a stage, but the real one. The doubts you had. The moment it broke through. The reason you stayed when it would have been easier to leave.
That story, told in your own voice, carries weight that no tract or sermon can match. Not because it is more logical, but because it is yours, and because the person reading it knows you.
What makes a testimony worth leaving behind
The temptation is to clean it up. To present your faith as a straight line from uncertainty to conviction, with no detours. But the detours are the whole point.
- The doubt you actually had. Not a rhetorical doubt that sets up a tidy resolution. The real one. The night you were not sure any of it was true.
- What happened next. Not a miracle, necessarily. Maybe just a slow turning. A verse that would not leave you alone. A person who showed up at the right moment. The unremarkable way God often works.
- Why you stayed. This is the part people most want to hear. Not why you started believing, but why you kept believing when it cost you something.
A testimony that includes struggle is not a weak testimony. It is a credible one.
Why it matters more in a letter
When you tell your story in person, the other person has to respond in real time. They have to manage their face, choose their words, navigate the social pressure of the moment. A letter removes all of that. They can read it alone, at their own pace, and sit with it as long as they need to.
And if that letter arrives after the rapture, the context changes everything. Your faith is no longer theoretical. It is the reason you are not there. Your testimony becomes evidence — not proof, but evidence — that what you believed was worth staking your life on.
The story only you can tell
No one else was in the room when you decided this was real. No one else knows what it felt like to stop running. Your pastor cannot tell that story. Your favourite author cannot tell it. Only you can, and only if you write it down.
