A letter of apology and reconciliation (free template)

Free template

The hardest letters are the ones that say sorry without a 'but,' or that reach across a rift you never mended. This template keeps it plain and honest. Copy it, make it yours, and cut anything that isn't true for you.

The template

Yours to copy and change. The blanks (___) are for you to fill in.

Dear ___, There is something I have owed you for a long time, and I don't want to leave it unsaid. So if you're reading this, here it is, plainly. I'm sorry. For ___ — name the thing directly, without softening it. I know it caused you harm, and I know I didn't always own that at the time. You weren't imagining it. It was real, and I am sorry. I'm not writing to explain myself or to hand you my guilt to carry. An apology with a "but" on the end isn't really an apology, and you deserve the real thing. Whatever distance grew between us, I would rather you keep the good of what we had than the weight of what went wrong. If there is anything to forgive, I hope in time you can — and if there isn't, then just know this: you mattered to me, and you still do. With love, and more of it than regret, ___

What happens next

You write it now and we hold it. Nothing is sent while you’re here to send it — it’s only delivered to the people you name if the day comes that you’re gone. Read how it works for the honest version, including what this does and doesn’t promise.
