How many letters should you write

The honest answer is: start with one. The person you think about most. The name that surfaces immediately when you imagine being gone without warning. Write to them first.

Most people find that the first letter opens something. Once you have said the hard thing to one person, you realise there are others. Not dozens, usually. But more than you expected.

Start with the person who keeps you up at night

You already know who this is. It is the person you would reach for if you had thirty seconds of warning. The relationship that carries the most weight — whether that weight is love, regret, unfinished business, or all three.

This is your first letter. Do not overthink it. Write it badly if you have to — your last words do not have to be perfect. The important thing is that it exists.

Then think in circles

Once the first letter is written, think outward from there:

  • Your children. If you have children, each one deserves their own letter. Not a group message. A letter written to them specifically, about them specifically — about what your children need to hear from you.
  • Your spouse or partner. The person who shares your daily life. The one who will feel your absence in every room of the house.
  • Your parents. If they are still living, they may be left behind. A child disappearing is every parent's nightmare. A letter will not prevent the grief, but it can explain it.
  • Your siblings. The people who knew you before you were who you are now. The shared history that no one else carries.
  • Your closest friends. Not all of them. The one or two who would feel the silence most.

Quality matters more than quantity

A single letter, written with care and honesty, is worth more than ten letters written out of obligation. Do not write to someone because you feel you should. Write to someone because you have something to say.

If you write to six people and each letter says something real, you have done something remarkable. If you write to twenty people and each letter is a variation on the same generic goodbye, you have done very little.

The practical shape of it

For most people, the number lands somewhere between three and seven. That is not a rule. It is a pattern. It tends to include:

Some people write one letter. Some write fifteen. Both are fine. The only wrong number is zero.

You do not have to write them all at once

Start with the one that matters most. Live with it for a day. Come back and write another when you are ready. There is no deadline — except the one you cannot see coming.

Write your first letter — and see where it leads.
