Letters your grandchildren will never expect

You may not have grandchildren yet. They may be years away, or decades, or they may already be here pulling books off your shelves. It does not matter. What matters is that one day a person who carries your blood will wonder who you were, and the answer they get will depend entirely on what you leave behind.

The stories that survive

Without a letter, your grandchildren will inherit you through other people. Through your children's memories, filtered and softened. Through photographs that show your face but not your voice. Through family stories told so many times they have worn smooth, losing the details that made them real.

None of this is your voice. It is an impression of you, assembled by others, and it will be incomplete in ways no one notices until it is too late to fix.

A letter is different. A letter is you, unfiltered, speaking directly to someone who may not yet exist but who will one day hold your words and hear you in them.

What to say to someone you have never met

This is the part that stops people. How do you write to a person you do not know? You do not know their name, their temperament, their struggles, the world they will live in. How can you write something that will matter to them?

You write about what you do know. You know yourself. You know your family. You know what you believe and why. And you know things about this family that no history book or photo album will ever capture:

  • What your kitchen sounded like on a Sunday morning. The specific chaos of it. The radio station. The argument about eggs.
  • What you were afraid of. Not the grand fears. The small, human ones. They will recognise themselves in those.
  • What you believed and what it cost you. Your faith, in your own words, not as doctrine but as lived experience. What it meant to you on a difficult Tuesday, not just on Easter morning. This is why your testimony matters after you are gone — it reaches people in moments you cannot predict.
  • What you hope for them. You cannot know their circumstances, but you can bless them. You can tell them they come from people who loved fiercely and believed stubbornly, and that whatever they are facing, they are not the first in this family to face something hard.

The letter no one else can write

Your children can tell your grandchildren about you. Your spouse can share memories. Friends can fill in gaps. But none of them can write in your voice, with your particular way of seeing things, about the life only you lived.

That is what a letter preserves. Not information — anyone can pass along information. A letter preserves presence. It is part of the ministry of written words — a tradition as old as the faith itself. The way you built a sentence. The things you thought were funny. The way you said "I love you," which was different from the way anyone else says it, because it was yours.

They will not expect it

That is part of what makes it powerful. A letter from a grandparent they barely knew, or never met, arriving at the moment everything changes. They will not be prepared for it. They will not have their guard up. If you are wondering how many letters you should write, this is one that most people do not think of until it is too late. And because of that, your words will reach them in a way that almost nothing else can.

Write a letter to the grandchildren you may never meet — in the voice only you have.
