What to say in a letter to someone you might never see again

You already know what you want to say. The problem has never been finding the words — it has been finding the moment. There is always a better time, a less awkward setting, a conversation you will have when you are both ready for it.

And so you wait.

Start with what you have been avoiding

The letter you need to write is not the one that comes easily. It is the one you keep circling. The apology you have rehearsed in your head a hundred times but never spoken. The thing you want your children to know about themselves, in your words, while those words still carry weight.

Most people who sit down to write a letter like this find that the first sentence is the hardest. Everything after it comes faster than they expected. The words have been waiting. You just have not given them a place to go.

Say it plainly

This is not a performance. The person reading your letter may be doing so in the worst moment of their life — confused, grieving, afraid. They do not need poetry. They need to hear you.

  • Say what you mean. "I love you" is better than a paragraph that circles around it.
  • Name the thing. If you are apologising, say what for. If you are explaining, say what happened.
  • Do not soften it into nothing. A letter that tries so hard to be gentle that it says nothing is worse than no letter at all.

You do not need to explain everything

You are not writing a memoir. You are writing to a specific person about a specific thing. The letter does not need to cover your whole life, your whole faith, or your whole relationship with them. It needs to say the one thing you would regret never having said.

Some people find it helps to imagine the moment their letter arrives. The person opens it, reads it, and then — what? What do you want them to feel? Write toward that.

The thing that stops most people

It is not that they do not know what to say. It is that writing it down makes it real. Putting the words on paper means admitting that there is a reason this letter might need to be delivered. That you might not be here. That the moment you keep waiting for may never come.

That is exactly why you should write it now.

Write your letter today — while you can still choose the words.
